Michter's Single Barrel Rye Whiskey
Michter’s Single Barrel Straight Rye
Purchased for $48 at a local liquor store.
No age statement (rumored minimum of 4 years)
84.8 proof
Reviewed neat in a glencairn.
Appearance: Orangish-red caramel in color. Thin, fast legs and beads beautifully.
Nose: Orange zest, cherry syrup, barrel char, and oak. There’s more oak and char than I would have expected for the young age.
Palate: Cinnamon and honey. A healthy amount of mint, and a light amount of cherry. There’s an undertone of familiar rye spice through and through. Very thin mouthfeel and doesn’t easily coat the palate.
Finish: The finish is very light. There’s little to no hug. There’s a sort of sweet oak and light ethanol profile left on the palate. It’s rather monotone really.
Rating: 5.6/10
Overall: This has an amazing nose and palate considering it’s not even 90 proof! There are bottles over 100 proof that don’t have this much flavor. However, the finish fell quite flat. It’s not quite as “spicy” as I’m accustomed to for ryes, however, there’s an ample amount of preferable flavors for me. Also, with as low in proof as it is, it holds its own EXTREMELY WELL in an Old Fashioned. Highly recommend to try it in one.
1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out.
2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice.
3 | Bad | Multiple flaws.
4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but many things I’d rather have.
5 | Good | Good, just fine.
6 | Very Good | A cut above.
7 | Great | Well above average
8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional.
9 | Incredible | An all time favorite
10 | Perfect | Perfect
